December 18th 2006 09:13
Matt Price from The Australian blogs has a look at the top 10 news stories in Australia in 2006.

There are a couple of top 10 lists, the first from the AAP wire service:

1. Iraq
2. Howard stays/Beazley dumped
3. Deaths of Steve Irwin and Peter Brock
4. Beaconsfield rescue
5. Terrorism - David Hicks, foiled British plot, release of Jihad Jack Thomas, etc

6. AWB scandal
7. World Cup
8. Climate change
9. Trouble in the Pacific Islands
10. Media shake-up

The second list was compiled by Media Monitors, and lists the top ten stories as measured by coverage in all Australian media:

1. Iraq
2. AWB scandal
3. Lebanon war
4. Petrol prices
5. East Timor
6. Interest rates
7. Industrial relations laws
8. Climate change
9. Bali Nine trials
10. Beaconsfield rescues

So do you agree with these lists? If not what should be removed or added, and what do you think 2006 will most be remembered for?
