Radar to be Used to Find Diggers' Bodies

January 11th 2007 07:56
Southern Vietnam during the war.
Southern Vietnam during the war.

The West Australian reports that a small government funded team will use radar to try and find the bodies of two diggers missing in Vietnam for over 40 years.

Using information gained from Viet Cong soldiers, the group known as Operation Aussie Home (OAH) will spend a fortnight concentrating on a 2.4 hectare zone in a tree plantation - formerly jungle and since cleared and planted - in rural southern Vietnam.

OAH hope to find the Aussie soldiers Peter Gillson and Richard Parker, who were buried where they fell in the battle of Nui Gan Toi on November 8th, 1965.

"What a waste of Government funds".
I'm sure the Families of the two blokes disagree. I'm sure their fellow soldiers disagree. I'm sure friends disagree. I definately disagree with your selfish, ignorant statement. They fought and died in the service of our country and its only right that they be brought home if its possible.
Some people really dont want to think outside they'r own little worlds do they?

"Some people really dont want to think outside they'r own little worlds do they?"

- this statement could just as easily apply to those who want the government to spend all this money finding bodies that may or may not be findable.

wouldn't the money be better spent saving lives as opposed to such an exercise as this?

These guys gave their lives because they felt they were saving lives. Its only right that the country honour the sacrifice and find them. I cant imagine how i'd feel if my brother or my mates were just off in the jungle somewhere. I was lucky enough to be able to visit the graves of my friends who died. I'm sure the families and friends of these two want the same.
Human sacrifice should never be given a monatary value. These men, like most who went with the Australian army to Vietnam, believed in what they were doing and that it was good and worthwhile. We should honour them and what they did.
I see the finding of MIA's as a very big thing and i say again, your not thinking outside your own world. Think of how others feel.
