Victoria's Wind Farm Will Go Ahead
December 21st 2006 06:23
As The Age reports the Bald Hill Wind Farm to be located in South Gippsland was cancelled earlier in the year as a study found it would kill up to one orange-bellied parrot a year.
However, Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell has reversed his decision and given the wind farm the go ahead under a revised plan where six turbines have been moved so as to not interfere with the migratory path of the parrot.
The wind farm will provide electricity for 65,000 homes and save 414,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases each year. On the other hand, the huge turbines can take away from the beauty of an area and drop property values, the constant hum from the turbines can be annoying to residents, and they create a danger to local birdlife. So are the government doing the right thing and should more wind farms be built?
